GIRLS ON FILM

SHOO MAGAZINE
Summer 2003

NICK RHODES
For someone who posseses a collection of Vogue magazines dating back to 1912, plus a long term passion for the photographic image, it's surprising that Nick Rhodes has never got behind the camera a magazine before. So why choose Shoo for his first major shoot? 'I had time and you asked me!' says Duran Duran's blond-haired rocker who has been a keen photographer 'for as long as I can remember'. Nick chose six beautiful girls for the Girls On Film fashion story - including his girlfriend Meredith Ostrom - and fused the worlds of music and fashion. 'I like unique individuals with big personalities and energy and new ideas. All these women have that', he enthuses. Shooting at the Dorchester hotel and Les Tros Garcons restaraunt in London, Nick injected some unique touches of his own. See for yourself on page 74. Meanwhile, the glam rocker is busy working with the original line-up of Duran Duran, who've just relaunched their careers with a new album and a summer tour of Japanand the US. That's not to mention his other current projects, including producing The Dandy Warhols , Monkey Me - an internet television show he's developing, plus an album with Stephen Duffy. And his other passion? 'Books are my big weakness, I've collected them forever. I've got about 10,000, mainly in storage. They're on pop culture, everything from photographs to fashion.'

Meredith Ostrom 23, is an American actress and the girlfriend of Nick Rhodes. Back in 2001, I was in London, trying to steal a cab off three guys, when one of them came up to me and said, 'Hey, let's share it' it turned out we were all going to the same place - Mario Testino's party for his book Alive! - so I agreed. I remember looking at these guys with their trendy haircuts and thinking they must be in the music business - Then, when we got to the party, I was shocked to find the paparazzi shouting, 'Nick, Nick'. I turned round and said, 'Who are you? Austin Powers?' He laughed, Nick stayed by my side all night ... We started dating and about a month later he told me he was in Duran Duran. I was startled. Of course, I'd heard of them-they'd been huge in the States - I'd just had no idea. I liked Nick from the start. He is stable and level-headed, and works very hard. We have lots of fun being part of London's crazy social scene. I still go home to New York regularly to see my friends and family. I've just been over there to meet a director for a new film I'm working on. My acting career began when I went to New York University's Tisch School of Arts, which is like RADA. There, I met director Abel Ferrara and worked on three cult films with him. After acting, my other passion is fashion and I love Armani, Chanel and Antony Price and, Of course, shoes by Manolo Blahnik. Have I committed any fashion faux pas? Just the one. Nick and I were going to a wedding and I put on a bright yellow skirt with matching top, shoes and bag. Nick just said, 'No way - you look like a daffodil.' He was right. But then, in New York, we all dress like daffodils at weddings.
